Sora

In Stargate Atlantis, Sora Tyrus was from the Genii homeworld. She served under Acastus Kolya, and was part of a raid the Genii conducted against Atlantis. Sora blamed Teyla for her father's death when she left him behind on a Wraith hive ship, and the two fought over it. Teyla won, and spared Sora's life, ending their feud. She disagreed with Kolya's ruthless methods, and preferred to spare lives wherever possible.

In the video game Kingdom Hearts, the main protagonist is a teenage boy named Sora. I know nothing about this game, so I won't attempt to explain it.. click the links if you want to know more!

Marvel is the name of a comic book publisher that has turned into a huge entertainment franchise. Among Marvel's superheroes is Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel's real name was Carol Danvers. She joined the United States Air Force where she worked in military intelligence, and later joined NASA. During a battle, she was knocked into a damaged Kree Psyche-Magnitron machine. It altered her genetic structure, turning her into a half-Kree superhuman. She then became a member of the Avengers.

In X-Men, Marvel Girl was the daughter of Cyclops and Phoenix in an possible future. Her real name was Rachel "Ray" Summers. She was the a member of a group of space pirates known as the Starjammers. Her son, Jay Scott Grey Summers was known as Marvel Boy.

In the D.C. Comics franchise, William Batson was known as Captain Marvel. A wizard named Shazaam gave him the powers of six legendary heroes of Ancient Greece. He had Shazaam also give powers to his twin sister who became known as Mary Marvel and his friend Frederick Freeman, who became Captain Marvel Jr. together they were known as the Marvel Family.

In The Hunger Games, Marvel was a tribute from District 1. Katniss killed him after he killed her ally Rue.

Marvel is an English word name that means "a wonderful thing." Marvel was among the top 1,000 names for girls from 1900 through 1941. It's highest rank was in 1901 when it was #519. It never ranked in the top 1,000 for boys. In 2014, 28 girls and 24 boys were named Marvel. The alternate spelling Marvell was given to 12 boys.

Ara

Ara is a constellation in the southern sky. The constellation name comes from the Latin for 'altar'. It was first described by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century. There are 8 main stars in the constellation. The Stingray Nebula is in Ara.

In Stargate Atlantis, Ara was a member of the Satedan military who was captured by the wraith, and eventually became a wraith worshiper. She was killed by Rakai, one of her fellow wraith worshipers.  In Stargate SG-1, Ara was the name of a platform in the shape of the Ori symbol for Origin, upon which heretics were burned.

In Dragonlance, Ara Kano was a leader of the town Pirim.

Ara Tribe is a tribe in the StarCraft Universe.

Project Ara is a Google initiative to create modular smartphones.
Ara is a genus of macaws.

Although the constellation name is derived from Latin, Ara is also a female Persian name that means 'brings rain', and a male Armenian name from a legendary King, Ara the Beautiful. Ara is sometimes used as a nickname for the Russian name Avrora. It can also be used as a nickname for Arabella.

Ara appears in the SSA's top 1000 girl names from 1900-1918. It's highest rank was in 1901 when it reached #559. It has never reached the top 1000 for boys. It was given to just 49 girls and 7 boys in 2014. Although it's unisex, I think Ara works best for girls due to it's similarity to Ada and Ava. It would be a good choice for parents who like those names but want something a little different.

Temeraire

Temeraire is a Dragon created by author Naomi Novik. Her Temeraire series consists of seven novels that re-imagine the Napoleonic Wars with an aerial squadron of Dragons thrown into the mix. Temeraire is a Celestial dragon, a rare breed that is worshiped in it's native China. While still in his egg, Temeraire was captured from the French by a British ship, and the ship's Captain William Laurence became the dragon's companion. Temeraire's power is the 'Divine Wind', a roar that produces a concussive force that can destroy objects.

Téméraire is a French word that means "rash, reckless, foolhardy." The name wouldn't really work for a person, but I think it would be an awesome name for a rambunctious pet.

River

River Tam was the younger sister of Dr. Simon Tam on the series Firefly. She was a prodigy, and was sent to a private school which turned out to be a government experiment in creating the perfect assassin. After decoding a secret message she sent to him, Simon rescued her, and they both became fugitives. They took refuge on Serenity, with Simon becoming the ship's medic. Due to the experimentation on her mind, River had violent outbursts of emotion and psychic abilities. She was also incredibly skilled in hand to hand combat, performing in ways that no normal human could.

River Song was a character in the modern version of Doctor Who. River was actually named Melody Pond, and was the daughter of Amelia Pond and Rory Williams. Melody's name was translated to River Song by Lorna Bucket of the Gamma Forest. Pond wasn't translatable because the only water in the forest was the river. River was kidnapped as an infant and trained to kill the Doctor. She escaped and grew up alongside her parents as their childhood friend. She and the Doctor kept meeting each other out of order, and she kept a journal of their meetings. She spent much of her time in prison, which she routinely escaped from and returned to. She was imprisoned for killing the Doctor, although it ended up being just a replica of him. The first time the Doctor met her was when she died, having sacrificed herself to save others trapped in a Library computer. The Doctor saved her by transferring her consciousness to the computer where she was able to live forever in a simulation.

In 2011, River ranked at #424 for boys, and was #913 for girls.
